Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone

Zig Ziglar said it best:

Choices-Chances-Changes Quote

Whether we choose to be comfortable or uncomfortable, it is a choice we make.

The scientific definition of your ‘comfort zone’ is a form of mental conditioning that creates mental boundaries which determines what you believe you can or can’t do.

Here are typical reasons WHY most of us stay in our comfort zone:

  • We don’t want to be uncomfortable.
  • We are used to our routine and a pattern that minimizes risk and stress.
  • We feel fear.
  • We lack energy because of unsupportive environments.
  • We hold disempowering beliefs that limit our potential.
  • Being comfortable is easier.

So how do you step out of your comfort zone?

Here are 5 ACTIONS to move you forward:

1) UNDERSTAND why you are choosing comfort. Where is your resistance coming from? Are your environments supportive for change? Do you lack motivation?

You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge.

2) DECIDE to make a paradigm shift. When you change “I should” to “I must,” you increase the likelihood of achieving your goal and/or causing action.

3) ACCOMPLISH (at minimum) one action per day toward stepping out of your comfort zone. If you struggle with taking the first step, then it’s time to tap into your support system. If self-accountability doesn’t work for you, get someone to hold you accountable.

“Do that one thing everyday scares you.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

4) FUEL the momentum. Figure out what motivates and inspires you and then feed it to yourself. Are you led by the carrot or the stick? Healthy rewards in moderation can help you move closer to your goals. Some people apply “the stick” – they create a consequence for not working to reach a goal. You will need to choose what works best for you.

Music, books, movies, painting, exercise, art, creativity…

5) Speaking of rewards…REWARD yourself!!

Think of how you feel when a flattering compliment comes your way, or if you receive a pay raise, a bonus, an unexpected gift, or anything that recognizes you for being you.

Here is what I’ve done to step out of my comfort zone:

  • I’ve made FEAR my friend and I try to embrace it as often as I can. Healthy FEAR tells me that I’m moving in the right direction, that I’m pushing boundaries and growing.
  • I remind myself that God sends us blessings outside of our comfort zone. So I honor Him by pushing myself out of comfort and into the blessing!
  • I ask myself, ‘What am I going to compromise if I choose comfort?’ Take this to heart. There is a prize and a price to every decision. Some are big, some are small. What is the cost – what do you lose – by staying in your comfort zone?

Imagine if you applied this concept every time you stayed within your comfort zone. You might notice a pattern of stagnation, limits, and lost opportunities for growth.

Start today! Step out of your comfort zone and into everything that is awaiting you! You might just find what you desire is not that far outside your current reach.
